The 2006 demographic survey profile: Most see membership as a means to help them meet individual needs. Most members also consider membership a way for them to help their community. Respondents are highly educated, most live alone, are politically active, engaged and are overwhelmingly liberal. Respondents are highly engaged in community, and volunteer at higher rates than most. Members learned about the HEP largely from having known an existing member
HEP has been most successful in allowing members to act on behalf of the values that they cherish (such as building community and creating a better society). The membership is largely female, white, 45 years of age or older. Nearly one-quarter of members are not employed and are currently seeking employment. Household incomes are low, particularly among those respondents living alone. Many are independent of the two major national political parties. Social motivations are the lowest in this network, reflected in the fact that attendance at the HEP social events is rather low
Nearly half of the respondents indicated that the closing of HEP would have a “moderate” or “a large impact” on their ability to get needed services. See the Survey
